Customizing Baby Onesies with HTV

Do you have a favorite season? Mine is spring because I love the sunshine, the new flowers coming up and opening my windows for fresh air. Spring is also the season for new babies! If there’s a new little one in your future, or if you’re attending a baby shower then these onesies are perfect to gift to a new mom. Customizing baby onesies with HTV is a great beginner’s project if you’re new to heat transfer vinyl. So read on and create with us!

Supplies:

ImPRESSED Vinyl (in our pink and sky blue packs)
-teflon sheet
cutting machine (I used a Silhouette Cameo)
-weeding hook or craft tweezers
-blank baby onesies
-home iron or heat press

STEP ONE: Prepare designs in software

Open your software program (I used Silhouette Studio) and either create your own designs or import them. This “Little Miracle” design is from the Silhouette Design Store, and the “Got Milk?” I just typed out in a fun font.

Right click the Little Miracle design and select Ungroup. We need to separate the pieces since we will be cutting more than one color.

Now select all the designs, right click and select Flip Horizontally. Since we cut on the backside of HTV, all the designs need to be mirrored.

STEP TWO: Cut out HTV designs

Once our onesie designs have been sized and mirrored, it’s time to cut! Place your heat transfer material onto the cutting mat with shiny side DOWN.

Now go to the cut settings window and select the material we will be cutting. The Heat Transfer, Smooth settings work great with our heat transfer vinyl.

Load the cutting mat into the machine and let it get to work!

Repeat for each color.

STEP THREE: Weed each HTV piece

After all the colors have been cut, it’s time to weed. Begin by peeling away a corner of the vinyl, leaving just the design.

Use a weeding hook or a pair of craft tweezers to weed out the little insides of the letters.

Continue until each piece of the design has been weeded.

STEP FOUR: Press HTV onto the Onesies

After weeding, it’s time to heat up your iron to cotton settings with no steam. Iron any wrinkles out of the onesies so you have a smooth surface to work with.

Place the design onto the onesie. You can move it around as much as you’d like until heat is added.

Place a teflon sheet over the design and press for 15-20 seconds with firm pressure.

Allow the design to cool for at least 1minute, then peel the clear carrier sheet off. If any part of the vinyl starts to lift up, place the carrier sheet and teflon sheet back down and press for a little longer.

Repeat the same process for each additional onesies.

If you are adding more than one color, do it in layers. Press the pink layer first, allow to cool, then peel off carrier sheet. Then add the next color.

And voila you have a custom baby onesie. In just a few minutes you’ve taken a basic baby onesie and made it into a piece of clothing that new moms are sure to “ooohhh” and “ahhhh” over!
