The holiday season is upon us and with that…all things Christmas! I love this time of year because it means so many opportunities to create fun crafts! I love making custom shirts for any occasion, so why not whip up yourself some funny family Christmas t-shirts! Bonus…there’s a free SVG file for you at the end of the post!
–Heat Transfer Vinyl in Black and White
–Cutting Machine (I used a Silhouette Cameo)
-Teflon Sheet (included in our color bundle)
-Christmas SVG File– Free Download Below
Step One: Prepare design in software
Open your software program (I used Silhouette Studio) and import your free SVG file.
Right-click the design and select ungroup. Now you can move the check mark over the box you want.
Because the check mark now overlaps the box, we need to weld that part so the cut lines aren’t going through the design. Select your design, right-click and choose weld.
Great! Now select the entire design and Group it together so when you resize it, the whole design stays together. Now it’s time to mirror! Right-click the design and select Flip Horizontally.
Now we are ready to cut!
Step Two: Cut out HTV design
Once our design has been sized and welded, go to the cut settings window and select the right material. Because we are using imPRESSED Vinyl, select the Heat Transfer, Smooth settings. Remember to adjust your blade accordingly if you aren’t using the auto blade feature on a Silhouette Cameo 3.
Now place your HTV onto the cutting mat with shiny side DOWN.
I used white HTV from the white bundle and black from the assorted bundle. (You can also find a black bundle as well!)
Load your cutting mat into the machine and let it get to work!
Step Three: Weed Your Design
After both colors are cut, it’s time to weed! Begin by peeling the vinyl away from a corner, and leaving the design itself.
Use a weeding hook or craft tweezers to weed out the little insides of the letters.
Continue until the whole design is weeded.
Step Four: Press HTV onto shirts
After the design is weeded, it’s time to add some heat! Warm up your iron to cotton settings with no steam. For a heat press, follow the manufacturer’s guidelines. Begin by ironing out your shirt, so there are no wrinkles and then place your design where you want it.
Cover the design with the Teflon sheet (included in our color bundle) and press for 15-20 seconds in each area.
Allow HTV to cool for at least 1 minute. Then carefully peel off the clear carrier sheet. If any part of the vinyl starts to lift off, place the carrier sheet and Teflon sheet back down and press for a little longer.
That it! You’re done with yours. Now it’s time to make a few more for the rest of the family!
Heat transfer vinyl is such a fun and easy way to customize your shirts for any occasion. It’s the perfect material for adults all the way down to babies!
