If I had to pick one phrase that was said most often about babies, it would probably be: “they are growing so fast!” Isn’t that true? Babies seem to just sprout overnight and their first year flies by in the blink of an eye. So why not capture their progress with a milestone blanket. They are super easy to make with a little heat transfer vinyl! They also make the perfect gift for a new Mom. So let’s make one:

Supplies Needed:

heat transfer vinyl -cutting machine (I used a Silhouette Cameo) -teflon sheet (included in your Assorted Color imPRESSED Vinyl bundle) -weeding hook or craft tweezers -home iron or heat press -blank muslin baby blanket (we found ours on Amazon)

STEP ONE: Prepare numbers in software

Open your software program and use the text tool to type out numbers 1-12.

Feel free to change the font to your liking, and size the numbers to fit well on the blanket. This is also where you can get creative and add additional text such as the baby’s name, a cute saying or a fun hashtag.

Once the numbers are just how you want them, it’s time to cut!

STEP TWO: Cut Your HTV

After you have designed your numbers, right click on them and select flip horizontally. Because we cut on the back side of the HTV, we have to mirror our designs.

Look at our numbers all mirrored and cute!

Now go to your cut settings window and select the material we will be cutting. With imPRESSED Vinyl, the Heat Transfer, Smooth settings work great!

Place the heat transfer material onto your cutting mat, shiny side DOWN.

Load your cutting mat into the machine and let it get to work!

STEP THREE: Weed Your HTV

After all the numbers have been cut, start weeding the numbers by peeling off any vinyl that is not part of what we will be using.

Use a weeding hook or a pair of craft tweezers and peel out the little insides of the numbers.

Continue until all the numbers have been weeded.

STEP FOUR: Apply Your Numbers Onto The Blanket

After all the numbers have been weeded, heat up your iron to cotton settings with no steam. Iron out the wrinkles of your blanket so you have a smooth surface to work with.

Next, lay out your blanket flat and place the numbers where you want. Be sure to leave some room for the cute baby!

Now take your teflon sheet and place it over your first few numbers and press each number 15-20 seconds. Repeat on each number until they have all been pressed.

After each number has been pressed and cooled for at least 1 minute (imPRESSED Vinyl is cold peel) carefully peel off the clear carrier sheet. If any part of the vinyl starts to lift off, place the carrier sheet and teflon sheet back down and press for a little longer.

Now you have the perfect backdrop to lay your baby on for their monthly photo shoot.

One of the best parts about working with Heat Transfer Vinyl is the ability to completely customize items to your liking and style. You can customize just about anything with HTV!! Think of all the fun baby items/gifts you could customize: onesies, blankets, bibs, fabric toys, shoes, you name it!I Whatever you decide to make, get moving— because that first year will be over before you know it!

Happy Crafting!
